Condo Roof Collapses Under 21 Inches of Snow

Residents at a Gaithersburg condo may have to evacuate after the roof partially collapsed; utilities had to be turned off to the building.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Emergency officials may have to evacuate a Gaithersburg condo unit after its roof partially collapsed under the weight of heavy snow.

Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, said on Twitter that county emergency management officials are at the Potomac Oaks Condos, 766 Quince Orchard Blvd.

A preliminary report from the National Weather Service says the Gaithersburg area has received 21 inches of snow so far.

While no injuries have been reported in the mishap, electricity and gas have been shut off the building, so there is no heat.

For no residents are staying put, but they may have to leave.

Emergency authorities are working with condo managers to determine if residents will be displaced, he said about 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
