Montgomery County Council To Elect New President, VP On Dec. 4

The Montgomery County Council will elect new officers to a one-year term.

From Montgomery County Council: The Montgomery County Council will elect new officers to one-year terms at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4 in the Third Floor Council Hearing Room. Councilmember Hans Riemer will complete his term as Council president, and Councilmember Nancy Navarro will complete her term as vice president.

After the election of new officers, the Council is scheduled to get a briefing from Melanie Wenger, director of the Office of Intergovernmental Relations (OIG), about the upcoming Maryland General Assembly session that begins on January 9, 2019. OIG represents County interests at the regional, state and federal levels. The office prepares the annual State Legislative Program and the annual federal priorities request and serves as the County’s liaison for state government, the County’s state delegation and congressional staff. OIG is the lead agency representing the County before the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) and the National Association of Counties (NACO).

At 2 p.m. the Council is scheduled to vote on Bill 39-18, Domestic Violence Council - Membership - Amendments. Councilmember Sidney Katz is the lead sponsor. Expedited Bill 39-18 would add two members to the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council (DVCC); extend the term of the chair of the DVCC; and modify the requirements for the student member. The goal of Bill 39-18 is to enhance the ability of the DVCC to accomplish its mission by allowing the chair to serve for more meetings and giving the student member a longer tenure.
