Name Released of Teen Killed by Amtrak Train; Service Resumes (Update)

The Boyds 16-year-old was walking with two other teenagers near the tracks and then stepped on the tracks, police say.

Authorities have released the name of a 16-year-old from Boyds who was killed when he was struck by an Amtrak train.

The accident happened about 4:45 p.m. on the tracks in the area of the Boyds Market located at 15110 Barnesville Road in Boyds, according to Montgomery County Police.

Investigators say John Martin DeReggi Jr., 16, of the 20700 block of Slidell Road in Boyds was walking along the tracks with two other teens when he went on the tracks and into the path of a northbound Amtrak train. DeReggi died from his injuries at the scene; police are trying to determine why he walked on the tracks.

Train service has resumed after a teenager was struck and killed while on foot crossing railroad tracks near Boyd’s Market, according to Montgomery County authorities.

Montgomery County Police are investigating the collision and rail service was stopped in the Boyds area for more than two hours. Officials said train service resumed shortly after 7 p.m. Monday.

The Amtrak train was en route from Washington, D.C., to Chicago after a stop at Rockville, The Washington Post reports.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer more than 200 passengers were on board the train when the collision occurred. There were told to stay in place.

EMS personnel evaluated passengers and transported six bystanders from the scene. Piringer says those taken for medical care did not suffer serious injuries, were but were “despondent” after the fatal accident.

MARC authorities said all westbound Brunswick Line trains were held at Germantown Station because of the nearby accident until after 7 p.m.

The Capitol Limited Amtrak train runs daily between Washington, D.C. and Chicago, with stops in Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
