• $10 Million Bicycle and Pedestrian Project Begins In Montgomery County (mocoshow.com) — Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians in Silver Spring will soon see major changes as a $10 million project adds a protected two-way bike path and new ADA-compliant sidewalk along 16th Street between Spring Street and 2nd Avenue. Starting Monday, October 5, northbound 16th Street will be reduced to one lane for about nine months, with additional weekday and possible nighttime lane closures through completion in 2027 or 2028.

• Woman hospitalized, 2 cats killed after fire at apartment building in Silver Spring (dcnewsnow.com) — A late-night fire at the Blair Plaza apartments on Blair Mill Road in Silver Spring left one woman hospitalized with burns and killed two cats after flames broke out in a closet on the eighth floor. About 70 Montgomery County firefighters contained the blaze to one unit, though two apartments suffered water damage. Investigators say a candle inside a closet caused the fire.

• Detours to begin Oct. 5 on 5 Ride On buses amid Purple Line construction (dcnewsnow.com) — If you ride Ride On buses in Silver Spring, expect late-night detours starting October 5 as Purple Line construction closes the Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street intersection from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. nightly. Routes 15, 16, 17, 20, and 28 will be affected through at least October 15, with riders urged to plan extra time and watch for temporary routing changes downtown.
