SILVER SPRING, MD — Tens of thousands of participants braved the pouring rain on Sunday to run the 44th Marine Corps Marathon — a 26.2-mile course through some of Washington, D.C.'s historic landmarks and monuments.

But that didn't seem to stop this year's top finisher: Silver Spring resident Jordan Tropf.

The 27-year-old completed the marathon with a time of 2:27:43, shaving 9 minutes and 32 seconds off his 2011 time.

"I love this race because of the landmarks and the crowd support," Tropf said. "The (wear) blue mile really reminded me why I was running, and gave me the push I needed to finish."

Tropf, who hails from Cleveland, is a Naval Academy graduate and a resident in orthopaedic surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Adam Stokes of the United Kingdom finished second with a time of 2:28:59. Woodbridge, Virginia's Matt O’Neil won second place with a time of 2:31:30.

"Funny Runner" Brittany Charboneau, 31, tried to break Russian Army Sgt. Olga Markova's marathon record for fastest female. Twenty-nine years ago, Markova set the record at 2:37:00.

Charboneau, a Colorado native, didn't beat the record. But she did win first place with a time of 2:44.47.

"I ran for personal growth, and coming off the bridge the cheering was so loud it was deafening. I had a blast," said Charboneau.
