The Universities at Shady Grove to Host 2012 Community Day Sept. 22
Fun-filled Campus Celebration for Whole Family to Feature Entertainment, Food, Activities Appearance by HOT 99.5 Radio Personality Sarah Fraser; Event Will Also Showcase USG Programs and Offerings
Rockville, Md.—The Universities at Shady Grove (USG),www.shadygrove.umd.edu, will host its 2012 USG Community Day event on Saturday, Sept.22, from 10 a.m. to 3p.m. at the USG campus, located at 9630Gudelsky Drive, Rockville, Md. 20850. A fun-filled day with food, entertainment and activities for the whole family, Community Day will also provide those attending with a chance to explore the USG campus and learn more about the various degree programs offered at USG by nine state universities.
Among this year’s highlights will be appearances by HOT 99.5 radio personality Sarah Fraser, Filmmaker/Author Mike Tidwell, and the Baltimore Ravens Cheerleaders. In addition,Brazilian Chef Paulo Machado, will inspire audience members to cook sustainably and provide live cooking demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
“We are so proud of the important role that USG plays in our community and we’re excited to host what we know will be a very special day on our campus,” said Dr. Stewart Edelstein, Executive Director of USG and Associate Vice Chancellor, University System of Maryland. “We have a great day planned for people of all ages and we look forward to welcoming the community to our campus, especially those who may not have yet been exposed to all that we have to offer.”
Among the special events planned for USG’s Community Day:“Fatal Vision,” a simulated drinking and driving experience; ‘Reduce, Reuse, Relay,” a way to learn about recycling and sustainability while having fun;a “green” scavenger hunt; and campus tours of USG and our LEED® Gold building. USG’s nine partner universities will be on site to provide guests with a chance to learn about the academic programs offered by USG’s nine partner universities. There will be several information sessions and attractions, such as ‘Power of the Presentation,’ Norman’s Farmers Market, and a ‘Community Shred,’ in which attendees can shred old bills and documents for free.An art exhibit featuring eco-friendly art will be on display in the Priddy Library.
USG Community Day will also featurea live, outdoor concert,with performances bysuch groups as Wootton High School’s a capella group, Supertonics, jazz by the famous Pryor Project and a dance performance by theBolivian Dance Team.
A variety of activities will be sponsored in part by USG’s nine partner universities: Bowie State University; Salisbury University; Towson University; University of Baltimore; University of Maryland, Baltimore; University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC); University of Maryland, College Park; University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES); and University of Maryland University College (UMUC).
