TU Nurse Shares Experience Working During Coronavirus

Tyrin Tyson ’18, describes himself as a bit of a nomad. He's someone who likes to
travel and see new places.

That’s why the Baltimore native, and self-described people person, became a nurse.
Not only is he able to help people, but as a travel nurse he was able to travel to
different parts of the country and apply his craft.

But when he graduated from Towson University’s nursing program in 2018, he never expected that his first travel assignment would be in the epicenter
of one of the largest pandemics in American history.

Tyson is currently working as an emergency department nurse in Brooklyn Sinai Hospital.
After spending the past month working in New York City, he said it was completely
different than what he did during his training days at local Baltimore hospitals.

“It was a culture shock,” Tyson says. “At my past two hospitals, we only had one suspected
person with COVID, but here (in Brooklyn) everyone had COVID. I didn’t see how real
it was until I saw how sick everyone was.

“There was ambulance on top of ambulance coming in…it was kind of like a war zone.”
