2 Bitter Blasts Follow Weekend Snow, Big Storm On Horizon?: See Snow Totals

Some of the coldest air in two years will envelope New England later this week as a powerful storm lurks to the south.

MASSACHUSETTS — Some of the most frigid Arctic air in the last two years will shock New England later this week, as a major winter storm threatens from the south, in what is shaping up to be the harshest stretch of the season.

That follows a Sunday snowstorm that dropped more than a half-foot of snow across much of Massachusetts and turned Gillette Stadium into a winter wonderland for the New England Patriots' AFC Wild Card victory against the Houston Texans.

The South Coast, South Shore and North Shore were some of the snow jackpots on Sunday, with Dighton checking in at 7.4 inches of snow as the top total in eastern Massachusetts. There was a widespread 3 to 7 inches across the Bay State.

Wednesday and Thursday will see some moderation with highs in the 30s and 40s before the Arctic air that will encompass most of the eastern half of the country will take hold over New England.

Wind chills will be well below zero as nighttime lows hover in the single digits. Highs on both Saturday and Sunday will be in the teens with a brisk northwest wind.

While the deep freeze will relent somewhat early next week, temperatures are expected to stay below normal for much of the next two weeks, according to the NWS.

Adding to the intrigue is a massive winter storm that is expected to develop over the mid-Atlantic and bring blizzard conditions to some of the East Coast.

What is not clear this far out is how much of that snow will pierce through the cold air in New England.

The NWS is calling for a 30 percent chance of snow Saturday night and a 40 percent chance for Sunday, with the track of the storm expected to come into much better focus as the week goes on.
