Fatal MA Car Crashes Down, Data Shows, But News Isn't All Good
A total of 352 people lost their lives in Massachusetts driving accidents last year, according to newly released federal statistics.
MASSACHUSETTS — Traffic deaths are down in the Bay State, but the news isn’t all good.
The number of fatalities in Massachusetts motor vehicle accidents during 2025 fell 3% from the previous year’s total, to a total of 352, federal data revealed this week.
Overall, traffic deaths decreased to record lows last year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

With an estimated 36,640 traffic deaths in 2025, a 6.7% decline from 2024, the nation saw its lowest traffic fatality rate in recorded history, at 1.10 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled.
Still, the Massachusetts death decline was far less positive than the nationwide average.

Nationally, the state ranked near the bottom – 36th – in the safety improvement statistics.
NHTSA estimates that fatalities decreased in 39 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico during 2025. Preliminary Federal Highway Administration 2025 data shows that vehicle miles traveled had increased by about 29.8 billion miles, or about 0.9%.
NHTSA also recently released its annual traffic fatality data for 2024, which showed drunken driving fatalities.
Accidents involving alcohol-impaired driving accounted for 27% of the fatal accidents in Massachusetts during 2024, the data shows.
