These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $31 million that will be offered next spring.

“Ethan, Kate, Adam, Lekhya and Omkar have worked diligently to reach this point and we are thrilled to see
them acknowledged for their hard work,” says Principal Philip Conrad. “It is an incredible opportunity to be
selected as a semifinalist.”

The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. These students represent some of the most academically talented students in our country and this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and encourage them in their pursuit of academic success.

Semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalists’ level and it is from this group that all National Merit
Scholarship winners will be chosen. From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level. In February, 2019, they will be notified of finalist designation. 7,500 National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
