Andover's West Elementary Named School Of Recognition In MCAS

All of Andover's public schools did well in the latest round of MCAS scores released Thursday.

ANDOVER, MA -- West Elementary School was named a School of Recognition -- the highest ranking for a public school in Massachusetts -- the the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The recognition comes with Thursday's release of standardized test scores and state-mandated assessments of public schools and districts.

Overall, Andover Public Schools were assessed as "meeting targets," the highest ranking for the state assessments. All of the schools in the district were assessed as "not requiring assistance or intervention."

"Our results are quite positive," Superintendent Sheldon Berman said in a statement. "In particular, we saw significant improvement in elementary reading (ELA) at all elementary schools and for all elementary sub-groups. Given the investments we've made in literacy, it appears our efforts are making a difference. We also made improvement in science, particularly at the elementary level. At AHS, the new schedule and H block may have contributed to a 15% gain in students’ scoring advanced on the high school Introduction to Physics MCAS. Math results remained relatively stable."
