Pole Hill was a Ballard-vale summer hot spot in the late 19th century. Upriver from the Ballardvale dam was the "Shawsheen Grove" at Pole Hill. This was a favorite place to picnic during the summer months. There were two swimming holes, a cook house, and a dance pavilion. In 1900, tragedy struck during a picnic at the grove when a man was shot to death during an altercation. Join Jane Cairns as she talks about the picnic tragedy at Pole Hill.
