First Forays into Archaeology: High School Students Present

High School students present on their archaeology expereinces

Join the Massachusetts Archaeological Society’s Gene Winter chapter to welcome seven Phillips Academy students in presenting their current research and work.

Youth for Restoration: Preserving Local History by Viraj Kumar
Viraj Kumar is an 11th grader at Phillips Academy from Poughquag, New York. Viraj’s interest in local history led him to create a non-profit organization that works to preserve and restore local history. He will discuss his experiences working with the community on a 19th century grist mill.

Printing History: 3D Rendering of Artifacts by Alana Gudinas, Jacob Boudreau, Mia LaRocca, Sarah Schmaier
Four students, all seniors, have been challenged to scan three artifacts from the Peabody Museum’s collection and print them as 3D models. The students will discuss the process and highlight some of the implications of this technology for museums and other institutions.

More than Meets the Eye: 19th Century Portrayals of Native Americans by Veronica Nutting and Alex Armour
In the 1830s, the first director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs launched an ambitious effort to collect over one hundred portraits of Native Americans. Two seniors investigate three of these paintings at the Peabody--how and when they got there, why they’re important, and how they compare to contemporary depictions of Native Americans.
