Gardening with Vines

Come to the Andover Garden Club meeting to forget about winter and dream about multidimensional gardens

Forget the snow and come listen to Cheryl Monroe explain how to take gardens into a new dimension via the creative use of annual and perennial ornamental vines. She’ll show how vines add height, scale, and drama to any gardening space, illustrating her talk with beautiful garden photographs. The presentation will cover using vines as structural elements, ground covers, and as a second season of interest in shrub borders. Attendees will learn which vines to avoid and how to follow the golden rule: “Right vine, right place.” The talk will emphasize clematis, which Monroe calls the “Queen of the Climbers.”

Monroe of The Garden in the Burrow (http://www.gardenintheburrow.com) is a Master Gardener and licensed adult educator specializing in clematis and garden design. She lectures and teaches throughout New England. Originally a self-taught gardener, she researches the science of horticulture, reading constantly and taking classes to stay current with the latest in plant research, new plant introductions, and design trends. This is reflected in her home garden, which features close to 100 clematis species and hybrids, and dozens of other ornamental vines.

Founded in 1927, the Andover Garden Club (www.andovergardenclub.org) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that encourages the study and practice of horticulture, landscape design, and floral design; aids in the beautification of the town of Andover; and helps protect and conserve natural resources. A member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc., and National Garden Clubs, Inc., the club provides both financial and hands-on support to a variety of municipal, educational, and environmental organizations throughout the region. Information about joining the Andover Garden Club is available from AGC membership chairs Linda Carpenter (978-475-7430, lcarpenter1@comcast.net) and Ronnie Haarmann (978-475-4414, rchaarmann@comcast.net).
