Lecture: Discourses of Colonialism - The Archaeology of Race and Racialization

archaeology lecture

Join The Massachusetts Archaeology Society Gene Winter Chapter for a FREE monthly presentation by leading archaeology experts.

Excavations at the Isaac Royall House & Slave Quarters Museum in Medford, MA offers a look at the experiences of master and slave at an 18th century estate in Massachusetts. Dr. Alexandra Chan will explore two important themes: that material objects and landscapes actually “speak” to you - if you know how to listen; and that race and the process of rationalization are more important than “ethnicity” in understanding the material culture of early African Americans in New England.

Dr. Alexandra Chan is a Principal Investigator at the cultural resource management firm Monadnock Archaeological Consulting.
