Witchcraft, Counter Magic, and Archaeology in New England

The Massachusetts Archaeological Society's Gene Winter Chapter presents a discussion of the Salem witch trials by Dr. Emerson "Tad" Baker

Dr. Emerson “Tad” Baker returns to the Massachusetts Archaeological Society’s Gene Winter Chapter to talk about his work. During his presentation, Dr. Baker will discuss the many forms of counter magic used to protect people, as well as its discovery on archaeological sites and old homes in New England. The evidence ranges from the baking of a witch cake in Salem Village in 1692, to horseshoes found on archaeological sites, and daisy wheels carved into house walls. Dr. Baker will also discus some of the findings of his new book, “A Storm of Witchcraft: The Salem Trials and the American Experience

Dr. Baker is a Professor of History at Salem State University. He is the award-winning author of many books on the history and archaeology of New England.
