ARLINGTON, MA — Robert Donovan has been named as Arlington’s newest Veterans Services Director, Town Manager Jim Feeney announced this week.
Donovan is a retired United States Army combat veteran who served as a Sergeant First Class and received an honorable discharge in 2018. After leaving active duty, Donovan spent five years at Home Base. Home Base is a foundation program by Mass General Hospital and the Boston Red Sox that works to help veterans and their families deal with trauma and other mental challenges. He is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from Simmons University.
Feeney expressed his full confidence in Donovan, saying his background of military service and clinical experience make him uniquely qualified for the role.
According to the town, The Veterans Services Director is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the Veterans Resource Center, which connects veterans and their families to financial resources and other benefits. The Director is also tasked with building trust and cohesion within the veteran community through peer engagement and community events. Veterans Services is a division of Arlington’s Health and Human Services. In his role, Donovan will be the Chair of the Arlington Veterans Council.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Robert,” Arlington Director of Health and Human Services Colleen Leger said. “His extensive background in veteran healthcare program management, case management, and DoD/VA community engagement gives me every confidence that he will serve Arlington’s veterans with skill and dedication.”
Other town departments that are considered part of Health and Human Services include the Arlington Youth Counseling Center, Council on Aging, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Veterans Service. HHS also works closely with the Board of Health, Board of Youth Services, Council on Aging, Disability Commission, Human Rights Commission, Rainbow Commission, and the Veterans Council.
