Electric Charging Station And School Bus Arriving in Arlington
The station is uniquely designed to draw electricity from and return electricity to the electric grid.
ARLINGTON, MA — The town announced it has secured its third electric school bus for the public school district.
Through the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center pilot program, Town Manager Jim Feeney said Arlington will receive a bi-directional charging station at no cost.
Bi-directional charging stations enable electric vehicle (EV) batteries to draw electricity from and return electricity to the electric grid or buildings. This technology makes it possible for EVs to provide backup power during electrical outages and reduce stress on the electric grid during times of peak energy demand. These additions are the next steps in the town’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by the year 2050.

“The Town is excited to be piloting this cutting-edge EV charging technology,” Feensey said in a statement. “We are grateful to MassCEC for this opportunity to work toward lowering the Town’s energy costs while contributing to local and regional energy resilience goals.”
The new bus is scheduled to be commissioned later this month. The charging station is expected to be in operation this coming summer, however an official launch date has not yet been determined. The town will send energy from the bus’s battery back to buildings during times of peak stress on the electric grid. This should in turn reduce the Town’s energy bills by reducing the amount of electricity that the building demands from the grid during these times, according to Feeney
