Arlington Community Ed offers classes focusing on the environment

The world's attention is on the environment and what we can do to save our planet during this Global Week of Climate Action. Become informed and discover the impact your decisions have on the globe and our community with these Arlington Community Education classes that focus on the environment. Learn about about the global effects of greenhouse gas emissions, how to minimize your own carbon footprint, and discover ways to help the environment by making small changes in your own home and garden. Climate Change 101: Science, Impact, and Solutions
4 Tuesdays, October 1 - 29, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. $65
Discover what scientists know and how they learn about the Earth’s climate, and explore strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the small scale (drive less) to the very large scale (geoengineering).

Create an Edible Landscape
Wednesday, October 16, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. $25
Learn how to design and create attractive gardens filled with ornamental plants and nutrient-dense edibles. This comprehensive workshop will help those interested in growing food in an urban or suburban landscape while using sustainable and organic practices.

Organic Care for Lush Lawns
Tuesday, October 10, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. $10
The horticulturist at one of the country’s premier golf courses, The Country Club in Brookline, Bruce Wenning, will share his ecologically safe and economical practices for lawn care and show you how to ensure a healthy lawn.

Control Invasive Woody Plants
Thursday, October 24, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Free
Learn about identification, biology and control of troublesome woody, exotic invasive plants that cause environmental and economic problems globally and can wreak havoc on your landscape. Because Bruce is so committed to spreading the word about invasive plants, he is offering this workshop free to ACE students.

Environmentally Mindful Home Renovations
Tuesday, November 5, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. $19
Learn how to renovate your home with the environment in mind. Discuss what it means to have a smart home; tax incentives available for energy efficiency conservation measures; choosing materials and products based on their carbon footprint; and how to achieve a high level of energy efficiency.

From Natural Emissions to Fossil Fuels: A Sector-by-Sector look at Climate Change

Take a deep dive into the individual sectors that influence climate-relevant emissions, and acquire tools to quantify your personal footprint. Explore both natural and human-made sources of emissions from sectors such as transportation, energy production, industry and agriculture.

Indoor Organic Composting: Vermicomposting

Imagine a healthy indoor compost bin that is virtually odorless and very easy to maintain. Learn all the steps and take home a compost starter kit that contains all the micro and macro organisms you need to get started.

Eat Local Year-round

It’s possible to extend the season of local eating beyond the summer months. Learn options available in the Boston area including extending your garden harvest, where to buy local foods, and preserving the summer bounty through freezing, canning and drying.
