ARLINGTON, MA — A resident has become a crucial member of the largest hunger-relief organization in New England.

Kathryn Alexander was appointed the Greater Boston Food Bank’s Vice President of External Affairs this February. Alexander previously worked as the Communications Director and Senior Advisor for Democratic Minority WHIP Katherine Clark, where she held the position for seven years. In addition to that, Alexander has nearly two decades of experience in the fields of public relations, electoral campaigns, and other government affairs in her career that has taken her to Arizona, Washington D.C., Virginia, and New York before returning to her home state of Massachusetts. Alexander graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in social work. According to the food bank, Alexander has led awareness and advocacy campaigns on topics such as education, healthcare, and reproductive rights. In her new role, she will do the same for the Greater Boston Food Bank on the issue of food insecurity through the supervision and management of the public affairs and public relations teams.

The food bank said that Alexander’s leadership is coming at a crucial time as demand from families in need and the uncertainty of federal nutrition programs both continue to increase.

“Right now, too many of our neighbors are struggling to put food on the table. At a moment when federal support for our social safety net is being rolled back, Massachusetts must continue to lead the way in ensuring that every person has the basics they need to thrive,” Alexander said. “I am honored to join The Greater Boston Food Bank and to bring my experience in federal and state advocacy to strengthen critical nutrition programs, support our local agency partners, and ensure that families across Eastern Massachusetts get the food and resources they need.”

The Greater Boston Food Bank serves 190 towns and cities across nine counties in the eastern part of the state. It was founded in 1974 by Kip Tiernan.
