ARMUN receives scholarship from Yale Conference, announces team
ARMUN is awarded $1400 scholarship for 12 students to attend the Yale Model UN Conference Jan. 18 -21 -- 4 Arlington students chosen 4 team
The Arlington Regional Model UN Clubs (ARMUN) are excited to share that they have been selected as recipients of this year's "Breaking Boundaries Scholarship" by the Yale Model United Nations Conference organization, and have been awarded approximately $1400 in funds to help make their participation in the Yale Model UN Conference in January 2018 a reality. The Clubs are now able to confirm that they will be bringing a team of 12 students to participate in this 4-day, world-renowned Model UN conference on the Yale campus from January 18 - January 21, 2018, and that the team has been selected and their preparations are underway.
In order to prepare for this conference, students will have to prepare to debate the topics assigned for their committees by doing research and preparing a research paper detailing their country's position on the topic and the solutions they will put forth for the committee to consider and turning that in several weeks prior to the committee, for at least two topics for each committee (so two papers per student at a minimum). They will also have to prepare by learning the specifics of the rules of debate and procedure that will be followed at the Yale Conference and learning as much as possible about their committee and their country, and of course making sure they know all the relevant logistical information that they need to learn in order to be ready for the conference. So there is a lot to in less than two months, with a major holiday coming up during the time that we have to prepare as well. And then the conference is an intense four days of more than 20 hours of committee and sessions of the conference that start as early as 9AM and last til 11:45 PM, and go throughout the day with only one and a half hour breaks for meals between the sessions where they are expected to be working and being engaged and involved at every moment. So it is demanding and intense, and exhausting, but very rewarding.
Four Arlington Students have been selected to be among the twelve students to be on the Yale Conference ARMUN Team: Charlotte Kilroy (homeschooled), who will be in the United Nations Environmental Programme, Maya Krishnan (Ottoson), who will be in the Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee, and Juliette Ortiz (Ottoson), who will be in the World Health Organization, all of whom will be representing Singapore in their committees, and Henar Maillo (Ottoson), who will be in the by-application Specialized Committee of the Cabinet of Fidel Castro, 1956, as a Cabinet Member, which is a Spanish Language Committee.

Other students who will be on the team include Medford students Gabriello Adler-Abramo (Ad-hoc Committee of the Secretary General, a by-application committee) and Ansel Miller (Historical General Assembly of 1955, Norway); Winchester student Thyra Roller (UN High Commission on Technology); Winchester student Amiyr Ahmad (Disarmament and International Security Committee); Waltham student Adam Goulet (International Court of Justice in the role of a Justice, a by-application committee); Quincy resident Peter Gilliam (Economic and Financial Committee); Groton resident Liam Offer (Association of Southeast Asian Nations); and Orange County, CA student Tyler McNally (Historical General Assembly of 1955, Iceland).
The group has to fund an additional amount totaling over $4500 in order to attend the conference, and while parents will meet some of this need there is an urgent need to raise funds from other sources. They have begun a Sponsorship Drive and have initiated a GoFundMe campaign and seek the support of any and all in the community who are able to give their assistance.
