ARLINGTON, MA — October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, a time when awareness is raised and when the public is urged to get themselves screened for breast cancer.
According to BreastCancer.org, about one in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. It is expected that 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2016.
The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition says that from 2008-2001, breast cancer was the most common type of cancer diagnosed among Massachusetts females, accounting for 29.3 percent of these women. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that breast cancer incidence rates in Massachusetts are over 5 percent higher than the national average.
