Founder Of Women's March PussyHat Project To Come To Arlington

Have a question for one of the women who thought up the Pussyhat Project? Meet her in Arlington.

ARLINGTON, MA — Jayna Zweiman, the founder of the Pussyhat Project, is coming to Arlington for a Question and Answer event, sponsored by Arlington Center for the Arts on January 24.

Organizers are still working out the final details, but there will be a Q & A from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and a reception following that. Members of the community are invited to come to the event and also bring their Pussyhat for a Pop-Up art exhibit during the reception.

The iconic pink knit hats with the ears, started as a way to show solidarity during a peaceful protest last January when women descended on towns and cities across the city (and then globe). They have since become an powerful symbol of political activism.

Roots:

Artist and architect Jayna Zweiman was rehabbing from a serious injury in late 2016 and took up knitting as something she could do while recuperating. During knitting classes Zweiman struck up a friendship with aspiring screenwriter and fellow knitting novice Krista Suh.

During conversations in knitting circles, the two women found common ground in their passion for women’s rights and the inspiration they found in the pro-women’s rights language of the-then pending Women’s Marches. They envisioned a sea of pink hats for those participating and an easy way to connect those who couldn't participate (for whatever reason) in the actual marches themselves: The Pussyhat Project was born.

As part of a series of events honoring the one year anniversary of the Women's march, including a Women’s March Anniversary Postcard Writing event the Arlington Center for the Arts is bringing Zweiman to town in an event designed to help the community learn more about the inception of the "craftivist" project that has so reverberated.
