Gas-powered Leaf Blowers Almost Extinct In Arlington
The device has been slowly phased out by the town for the last four years, with a permanent ban upcoming later this month.
ARLINGTON, MA — The final phase of the town’s gas-powered leaf blower ban is slated to take effect on Sunday, March 15.
When that date comes, gas-powered blowers will be permanently banned for all people in Arlington, including private residents. In 2022, Town Meeting voted in favor of a bylaw that would gradually eliminate the use of the device entirely. The first phase, which took effect on March 15 2023, introduced seasonal bans on commercial users of the leaf blowers. Two years later, commercial use of the devices were phased out entirely. A seasonal ban for residential use of the blowers was enacted between June 1 and Sertp. 14, 2025. This final phase will allow only the use of electric-powered leaf blowers with no exception.
Electric blowers can now be used by both parties from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and all holidays.

People who find other residents in potential violation of the bylaw must submit the name of the violator as well as the date, time, and location of the violation to the Health Department online. Other evidence such as photos and videos are permitted but not required.
First-time violators are subject to a written warning and education about how to properly follow the ordinance, while a second offense will result in a $100 fine. Subsequent violations within a calendar year will result in a $200 fine each time.
