The most important thing to do to protect yourself is to check for unauthorized activity on your accounts. And then call your credit card company or financial institution to follow-up, if you see anything suspicious or unusual. In addition you can receive your free credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion once every 12 months. Victims of identity theft can place a fraud alert and/or a credit freeze on their credit files. I also think that simply using cash, whenever possible is the safest way to go.
