Nowadays, practically everyone’s got their own online and/or digital dating horror story. But while most of those tales end with harmless embarrassment, an Arlington woman may have been catfished out of more than $2,000 worth of gifts she trustingly sent to a beau she’d never met or spoken to in person.
Police records say that at 3:16 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25., a woman arrived at the station to report what she had come to suspect was a larceny.

By her account, she had ventured on a digital romance with a person claiming to be a US Army soldier stationed in Afghanistan. Via email, this self-described Chris Kyle-esque individual sweet-talked her into sending him an iPhone 6, and several pricey articles of clothing for his possibly fictional comrades in arms. Ultimately, she spent more than $1,450, plus $600 shipping, on fulfilling his requests.
After hearing her story, police told the victim they’d file a larceny report, and advised her to break it off with her military man.
