Yoga Helps to Treat Symptoms of Anxiety

A New Yoga and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Group forming in Arlington

Many people suffer from anxiety. Symptoms of anxiety include excessive worry, racing thoughts, feelings of restlessness, sleep problems, as we well as physical issues such as stomach problems and headaches. According to the CDC, it is estimated that over 15% of people will suffer from anxiety in their lifetime.

Standard treatment for anxiety has often included medication (which may be helpful but sometimes causes side effects) and psychotherapy. Recent attention has also been given to the effects of alternative treatments such as yoga and mindfulness in helping to improve symptoms of anxiety.

A new treatment known as Y-CBT (Yoga-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) combines elements of CBT and Yoga in order to treat anxiety symptoms. Y-CBT has been shown through research to be helpful in treating anxiety and depression. Y-CBT works by helping one to gain increased awareness of negative thoughts patterns while replacing them with more realistic, hopeful, and self-compassionate thoughts. It also helps to target the physical symptoms of the body through mindfulness and gentle chair yoga practices.
