AHS Falls to KP in OT

It was a battle inside for 32 minutes in regulation time that forced a 4 minute overtime and the end result, a 56-51 victory for King Phillip.

McKenzie Richardson got KP in the scoring column first, with a 3 ball.  AHS answered with a Bri LaPlume put back and 1 of 2 free throws by Kerri Beland, to knot the score.  A steal by Emily Houle and ensuing basket gave Attleboro a 5-3 lead. The next 6 points, by LaPlume, tied the game at 11-11, however, Brianna Miccile’s free throw put KP in front 12-11, as the quarter ended.

Beland’s 2 free throws, at the opening of the second quarter and a score inside by Beth Clifton put Attleboro back in the lead, 15-12.  Back to back scores inside by Ellen Wagner put KP in the lead, but that was short lived as free throws by Beland and a Sarah Deyo score returned the advantage to Attleboro, 19-16.  With 4 lead changes in the period, a put back by Houle and drive by Beland, the quarter ended deadlocked, 23-23.

In the opening of the second half the teams exchanged baskets, with Beland matching a Wagner basket on 2 free throws.  LaPlume tied the score at 27 all and Attleboro began a mini run. Bri hit for 3, the old fashioned way, Houle scored on a drive to the hoop and a 3 from behind the arc by Beland had the Bombardiers in the lead, 35-30.  This was quickly erased as KP free throws and a 3 by Richardson ended the third period with King Phillip holding a 36-35 advantage.

In the final quarter of regulation time free throws by Beland returned a 1 point lead to Attleboro, which was negated by 2 King Phillip scores from the charity stripe.  LaPlume scored the next 4 points but a Wagner basket once again deadlocked the game at 41 all.  The two teams matched baskets and with little time remaining in the game, LaPlume converted on two free throws, to tie the game.  Attleboro had an opportunity to put the game away but missed on their last 4 free throw attempts A LaPlume steal ended regulation time, 46 all!

In the 4 minute overtime period KP put points up on the board first, as Wagner was fouled inside and made good on her free throws.  LaPlume was assessed her 5th personal and retired to the bench, with 3:36 remaining in the OT segment. Sarah Deyo was fouled on an attempted put back and made good on her free throws, tying the score at 48 all.  A Wagner hook shot inside returned the lead to KP and a made free throw increased the KP lead to 3.  Houle was fouled on a successful basket and was solid on her free throw, bringing Attleboro to within 2. This was the closest the Bombardiers could get as KP closed out the contest at the free throw line.

Bri LaPlume led all scorers with 19 points, a career high, and 12 rebounds.  Kerri Beland followed with 16 points, 6 steals and 5 assists.  Sarah Deyo added 8 points and Emily Houle contributed 8 rebounds, 6 points and 3 steals.

Attleboro’s free throw shooting, which had been so successful in prior games, was a disappointing 18-31. The tournament bound Bombardiers (13-5, 10-4) will entertain Taunton on Tuesday.
