10 Questions with Roy-L Groomingdale's Roy Laferriere

Laferriere's dreams came true at a Barnstable High School dog show.

Q: What did you dream of being as a kid?

As a child I always admired the different breeds of dogs and always hoped to do something with this interest. I am living my dream today with my dog salon.

My caring, positive energy plays a big roll in this business. Our personalities at helps to earn the dogs' trust and makes the owner comfortable to leave their “best friend” with us.

Q: At what moment did you decide to open a business?

I began grooming a few breeds for neighbors and friends at my home. Then I apprenticed with a dog groomer. I instantly knew I wanted to open a dog salon and what better place than dog friendly Cape Cod?

Q: What inspired you?

My inspiration was a Cocker Spaniel I purchased at a dog show at Barnstable High School in 1989. The moment I entered the dog show and saw all the different breeds, it was a dream come true. Winning many dog shows gave me the confidence and inspired me to own this business.

Q: What is the biggest challenge of owning a business in Barnstable?

My biggest challenge is when the business slows down 30 percent due to many customers leaving for the winter.

Q: Describe the best thing about owning a business in the town of Barnstable?

Our customers are neighborly and personally friendly, from this we get 50 percent of our business from personal referrals.

Q: What is one thing you would never change about your business?

In addition to being groomed dogs also have fun enjoying our free roaming Salon to play with each other.

Q: What is your business’ greatest asset?

The talented groomers at Roy-L Groomingdales who look at this profession as an art, not a job.

Q: What is your favorite spot in town?

Craigville Beach area, it’s known as a vacation spot and I am fortunate to be here all year round.

Q: What’s one thing the community should know about you?

I have been married for 25 years and have three talented teenagers and three dogs. I worked with developmentally and physical challenged people for 27 years in their homes, to help them live a healthy and happy life.
