Barnstable Traffic Faces Detours During Sewer Construction

Work is ramping up on new sewer service, which the town says is necessary to prevent degradation of local ponds and streams.

BARNSTABLE, MA — With construction ready to start Monday on a new sewer line and others already in the works, Barnstable drivers could face detours this week and for some weeks to come.

A 0.7-mile stretch of Bumps River Road – between Osterville-West Barnstable Road and Pond Street – will be closed as construction gets underway there, a notice from the town said last week.

The work will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and could run through May. Signs will reroute vehicles during the closures, but access will continue for local residents and businesses.

The new line on Bumps River Road is part of a 6-mile sewer service expansion around Route 28.

As part of that project, overnight sewer construction will resume along a portion of Route 28, between Phinney’s Lane and Old Stage Road. These closures will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., Mondays through Thursdays.

Phinney’s Lane itself will be closed between Route 28 and Main Street, Centerville, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The town said it expects to reopen Phinney’s Lane to normal traffic beginning on Thursday.

In addition, sewer construction continues along Shootflying Hill Road, the town said. That road will be closed between Service Road and Great Marsh Road during construction hours, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sewer expansion is a key part of Barnstable’s Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan, and the town council has already budgeted over $1 million to design the build-out. Currently, many residents rely on septic tanks, which the town says has hurt local bodies of water.

A public information meeting on the sewer expansion was held last month.
