Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Begins Study of Options for Land Use

The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority commissioned a study to investigate how they may develop the acreage surrounding the Hyannis Transportation Center.

The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) is investigating how to develop its large parcel of land surrounding the Hyannis bus station.

Last week CCRTA announced there will be a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Master Plan Study of the 10.84 acre parcel surrounding the Hyannis Transportation Center (HTC).

The study will define a conceptual and comprehensive plan that will guide future development and redevelopment with an emphasis on supporting transit ridership and smart growth. The project is expected to result in recommendations with cost estimates for the short (less than 5 years), moderate, (5-10 years), and long-term (greater than 10 years).

The CCRTA chose AECOM for its experience, creativity and overall lowest cost.  As a company, AECOM is a global provider of planning, engineering, and design services with offices throughout Massachusetts.

“The AECOM team is excited about this important assignment and looks forward to working with the CCRTA, the Town of Barnstable, and involved stakeholders at the local and regional level to develop a TOD plan that is both innovative and feasible. The Hyannis Transportation Center (HTC) area has strong potential for TOD thanks to its strategic location and other supportive planning initiatives. The challenge is to realize its potential in a phased and affordable way,” said AECOM Project Manager Jay Doyle.

CCRTA Administrator, Tom Cahir said, “We are excited about working with AECOM toward developing an intelligent, realistic plan with recommendations that are feasible and implementable”. He further stated “Any eventual development resulting from the Master Plan analysis must benefit transit but also assist in revitalizing Hyannis.  We have, and will continue to work closely with town officials and the Cape Cod Commission to ensure we achieve that objective.”
