Defense: Hyannis Explosives Were Homemade Fireworks, Not A Bomb
Dorian Firth, 40, pleaded not guilty after police said he was caught with explosives at a Hyannis group home.
HYANNIS, MA — A Hyannis man was arraigned in Barnstable District Court Tuesday after police said he was caught with a bomb inside the group home where he lived.
But according to the defense, the explosives were homemade fireworks, the Cape Cod Times reported.
Dorian Firth, 40, pleaded not guilty to possession of incendiary materials and felony possession of an incendiary device. According to Barnstable police, Firth had an explosive device Tuesday inside his room at Homeless Not Hopeless on Baxter Road.

Barnstable police conducted a search warrant with the help of the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, State Police detectives and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The Bomb Squad then took the explosive and detonated it in a controlled environment after collecting evidence.
Firth's Lawyer Richard Barry said his client is not a threat, and Firth was using YouTube videos to learn how to make homemade fireworks with products he bought from Amazon, the Cape Cod Times reported.

"There is nothing nefarious," Barry said. "This is a guy that is making homemade fireworks, not trying to blow anything up."
Firth was ordered held on $2,500 bail and is due back in court May 3.
