
Well-known organist Andrew Shenton -- scholar, prize-winning author, performer and educator based in Boston -- presents a recital of works by 20th century English composers in this week's program at Old West Church. Performing on Old West's magnificent C.B. Fisk Organ, Shenton will perform music by Simon Preston, Herberg Howells, Benjamin Britten, Michael Tippett, Paul Ayers, Kenneth Leighton and others.
Born in England, Andrew Shenton first studied at The Royal College of Music in London, and holds degrees from London University, Yale and Harvard. In addition to diplomas in both piano and organ performance, he holds the Choir Training and Fellowship diplomas of the Royal College of Organists. A former Organ Scholar at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, he has toured extensively in Europe and the US as a conductor, recitalist and clinician, and his two solo organ recordings have received international acclaim. Shenton has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards including a Harvard Merit Fellowship, Harvard’s Certificate of Distinction in Teaching and a Junior Fellowship from the Humanities Foundation at Boston University.
Dr. Shenton has given more than 40 world or US premieres by composers such as Geoffrey Burgon, Joe Utterback, Judith Weir and John Tavener. He is Associate Professor of Music at Boston University, Artistic Director of the Boston Choral Ensemble and Director of Music at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Weston, MA.
