Boston, 1789

We’re starting the new year by featuring a historical almanac in our virtual display case. Fleet's Pocket Almanack for the year of our Lord 1789: Being the First after Leap Year and the Thirteenth of American Independence is one of many almanacs found in our Special Collections. This almanac was printed and sold by brother’s Thomas and John Fleet, who ran the shop the Bible & Hart and were also the printers of the newspaper The Boston Evening-Post.

Fleet’s almanac starts off with a page for each month that provides the moon phases, along with weather predictions and “remarkable days” for the month. But the bulk of the publication is the Massachusetts Register, which was published annually from 1767 through 1878. It included a plethora of useful statistics and information on a variety of governmental, financial, education, and business topics.
