Dr. Lee-Parsons Delivers Talk at the Interdisciplinary Plant Science Symposium of the Northeast American Society of Plant Biologist Meeting

Carolyn W.T. Lee-Parsons, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of the Departments of Chemical Engineering and of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University, delivered a keynote speech at the Interdisciplinary Plant Science Symposium during the Northeast Regional American Society of Plant Biology Meeting last month.
During her talk, titled “Engineering the Production of Medicinal Natural Products from Plant Tissue Culture,” Dr. Lee-Parsons discussed her group’s path and journey of discovery in enhancing the production of valuable pharmaceutical compounds from plant cell cultures, specifically the production of important anti-cancer drug molecules from cell cultures derived from the Madagascar periwinkle plant. “My research combines the talents of an interdisciplinary team of chemical engineers, analytical chemists, molecular biologists, and plant biologists to solve the shortage of critical pharmaceuticals derived from plants.”
