Happy New Year!
This seems an auspicious time to start a new blog. I'm by no means new to
many readers of either Belmont Patch or the Belmont Citizen Herald, and
I've now decided to try this venue.
For many years, the B C-H allowed people to post comments on issues using
a 'handle'. Mine was, and is, 'No Freeloader'. This ceased with a policy
change last spring, and since then, there have been very few, if any,
comments posted. This is NOT a good thing. The C-H has become,
effectively, a propaganda outlet for Town Government. By adopting this
policy, the B C-H has abrogated the obligations of a free press.
You may ask 'Why do you not just post under your own name?' The answer
today is the same as in Revolutionary times... If you speak truth to
power, power will push back with harassment, or worse. This is evident at
the national level where the IRS has been used to harass groups opposed to
the current administration's Progressive agenda. There are many
opportunities for Belmont government to harass dissident individuals and
especially businesses.
Furthermore, if one speaks out against excessive public sector union
contracts, as I have, the risk of harassment is even greater. It is
unfortunate that the entrenched powers resort to such tactics to keep a
hold on their power, but with the unholy alliance between the unions and
Democratic politicians, it's a fact of life. To see that this is not a
good thing, one has only to look at the plight of bankrupt Detroit. There
is no way whatever that the Republicans, or anybody else, can be blamed for
that fiasco, since nobody but Democrats have held office there in over a half
century.
Those same policies have come to Belmont over the past decades, to the
point that Belmont has a giagantic unfunded liability to present and
former Town employees. The Selectmen have written blank checks that others
will be called upon to pay. But that doesn't matter... by the time anyone
tries to cash the checks, the current Selectmen will be out of office so
long that about the only memory of their irresponsibility will be framed
photographs in Town Hall.
It is quite clear that current Town policies are unsustainable... and I'm
not talking about ecco-nuttery. The Town, and certain Special Interests,
have deliberately chosen to try and attract new residents, each of whom is
a net money loser that cost the Taxpayers more in services than they
provide in revenue. This is not a new trend, as I've pointed out
previously.
A closing thought: Just as you look at what someone better off than you
has, remember, there are two or more who envy you! This is the unspoken
truth of the politics of envy.
"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative
and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and
should do for themselves."
