BOSTON, MA — An MBTA Green Line station is slated to shut down for nearly three years to allow for a major construction project.

Symphony Station is on the Green Line’s E Branch and is located on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Huntington Avenue. According to the MBTA, trains will not stop at the station during the closure that will go into effect on Saturday, June 6.

“Riders who typically board or disembark at Symphony can instead board or disembark at Northeastern University or Prudential, which are 0.3 miles away or about a five-minute walk from Symphony,” the MBTA said in a statement.

The Authority also named the nearby Orange Line Massachusetts Avenue station as a possible alternative.

Symphony was first built 85 years ago. This project aims to make the location more accessible for people with disabilities, as it currently has no way to access the train platform from the main entrance without steps. The $170 million endeavor dates back to 2019, when the design plan began. The feature addition to the renovations is four new accessible elevators. Other planned additions include raised platforms for easier boarding, accessible bathrooms, improved navigation, and more lighting.

“I’m proud of our MBTA team, including our Grants team that successfully pursued $66.6 million in federal funds for this project. It is the partnerships that we have with the FTA, local stakeholders, and community groups that make projects like this possible,” Interim Secretary of Transportation and MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng said. “We know that construction and temporary closures of the station affect our riders, but when finished, Symphony Station will be a bright, modernized, and fully accessible station that all can be proud of for generations to come.”

The entire E Branch of the Green Line will be unavailable from Saturday, May 30 to Friday, June 5 between Government Center and Heath Street stops. The MBTA has suggested Route 39 bus service as an alternative during that period.
