Cambridge-based Food Chain Cutting More Than 180 Employees
The company is headquartered in Cambridge with many locations in the area.
CAMBRIDGE, MA — A fast food company is laying off a relatively large portion of its workforce, according to a state filing.
Clover Fast Food, Inc. filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act with the state on Monday, signaling its upcoming dismissal of 182 Massachusetts employees based in Cambridge. The layoffs are slated to go into effect on Friday, May 29. CLover has multiple locations it operates within the city, with its central kitchen and administrative headquarters on 1075 Cambridge St.
The vegetarian restaurant chain was founded in 2008 by MIT and Harvard Business School graduate Ayr Muir with the goal of serving fully organic and plant-based items. What started out as a food truck turned into 13 brick-and-mortar locations throughout the Greater Boston area, including five spots in Cambridge. In November 2023, Muir filed for bankruptcy and turned operations over to Julia Wrin Piper. The business’s name was simplified from Clover Food Labs to Clover in early 2024 as part of a semi-rebrand and restructuring. In addition to its locations, Clover offers meal boxes with ingredients customers can prepare on its own as well as catering services.

Clover has not provided a specific reason for the recently announced layoffs. Federal law requires employers with more than 100 employees to provide a 60-day notice prior to mass layoffs and plant closures.
