Boston College Hires UConn's Luke Murray, son of Bill Murray, As Next Basketball Coach
Luke Murray has been in the collegiate coaching field for nearly 20 years.
NEWTON, MA — Boston College Men’s Basketball has hired University of Connecticut assistant Luke Murray as its next head coach, Director of Athletics Blake James announced.
Murray, who is the son of famous actor Bill Murray, is slated to become Boston College’s 14th head coach in the program’s history. The New York native has paved his own way through the ranks of college basketball throughout the past 19 years after graduating from Fairfield University, beginning as the Director of Operations for Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. He went on to hold varying assistant roles in seven programs before coming to UConn in 2021. Murray’s team reached the Final Four of the annual March Madness postseason tournament with a buzzer-beater victory over Duke On Sunday night, and Murray is expected to assume his new role when UConn is eliminated.
"Today marks a turning point in Boston College Men's Basketball," said James. "In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball - he has helped define it,” James said in a statement. “His role in building a national championship caliber program, his sophisticated offensive vision, and his relentless pursuit of excellence make him the perfect fit to lead our student-athletes.”

During Murray’s tenure, UConn has not only made the tournament all five years, but has also won two national championships. He is succeeding Earl Grant, who was fired earlier in March. Boston College has not had an NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009.
"I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College Men's Basketball program. BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition,” Murray said. “Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work to build this proud program.”
