MA Blizzard Latest: Snow Totals, Crashes, School Closings

The storm dropped over a foot of snow in some parts of the state, and it's continuing to fall.

What has been ruled a blizzard in many parts of the state is still going strong into Tuesday evening. More than 100 schools have already been canceled for Wednesday, about 200,000 homes are without power, and Boston is weighing what to do with the St. Patrick's Day Parade route. Dozens of cities and towns have already got more than a foot of snow.

The number of Massachusetts homes without power has dipped below 200,000. As of 6:32 p.m., the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said 196,270 were in the dark - a daunting number but one that falls well short of the damage done in the previous two storms. More than 100 schools and districts have already canceled classes Wednesday, which is when students had planned on taking part in a national walkout to oppose gun violence in schools. Read more: MA School Closings For Wednesday, March 14

Slick road conditions and dozens of crashes have police warning drivers to stay off the roads and downed trees and wires have been reported as the state prepares for a third wave of power outages (see road conditions below).

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts reached over 70 mph on Cape Cod, clocking in at 81 mph in East Falmouth, 79 mph in Hyannis and 77 mph on Nantucket. Boston saw wind speeds of 49 mph.

At a midday press conference, Gov. Charlie Baker cautioned that the storm is far from over, according to the State House News Service.

"This storm is still getting -- I wouldn't call it still getting going, but there is still a lot of time left in this storm," Baker said from the Department of Transportation Highway Operations Center in South Boston. Baker added that heavy snow is forecasted to continue to fall about 1-3 inches per hour for much of the day. The latest totals still call for 12-18 inches in eastern and central Massachusetts and as much as 2 feet for parts of Cape Cod and the southeastern part of the state.

Officials will speak with emergency management officials and municipal leaders at 3 p.m. to discuss the latest forecast and conditions across the state, according to Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito. Baker said utility crews are stationed around regions expected to be among the hardest hit so they can respond quickly once the storm passes and begin the work of restoring power.

"As soon as the snow stops and the wind stops blowing we'll be pushing the utilities to give people a sense about when the power will be back on," he said. "Over the course of the past 10 days the utilities have restored 750,000 homes and businesses that were without power ... and my guess is they will move quickly and aggressively to deal with this once the snow stops."
