MA Power Outages: 20,000 Without Power

Thousands were without power as of this evening, and that number is unfortunately expected to rise as heavy winds come in.

Bay State residents have had tough luck with power outages through some of the storms in the latter half of 2017. The big storm to open 2018 doesn't appear to be any different.

As of 4:30, more than 20,000 across the state were without power, according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. The worst of it appears to be in Cape Ann the Cape Cod.

Gloucester has more than 2,700 without power, and Rockport's 861 customers without power is nearly a fifth of customers there.

Areas on Cape Cod have already reported wind gusts of more than 70 miles per hour. Dennis and Brewster have a combined 3,000+ in the dark. Carver has more than 2,000 without power. Mattapoisett isn't fairing much better.

Earlier this morning more than 5,000 in Provincetown alone were without power - that's 95 percent of customers there - but the issue was quickly resolved.

Framingham and Natick had more than 1,000 without power between them, though power appears to have been restored in Framingham.

The main concern with a power outage during this storm is how much snow will be falling and how cold it will get afterward. The coldest air of the season is on deck for this weekend, with lows below zero. The snowfall could make for tough repairs.
