Massachusetts Election Results 2017

Get caught up on all the action from around the state.

Another Election Day is in the books after voters hit the polls Tuesday. New mayors were elected, city councils and school committees were reshaped and data discs crashed. Patch reporters were all around Massachusetts sorting it out. Here's where we stand:

In Boston, there was little surprise as Mayor Marty Walsh held off City Councillor Tito Jackson in a race that lacked energy and voter turnout. Jackson was vying to become the city's first black mayor.

Framingham's first mayor, meanwhile, will be a black woman. Voters elected Yvonne Spicer to lead them as Framingham transitions from New England's largest town to a city. Spicer defeated John Stefanini in a race that saw no shortage of controversy.

Newton has its first female mayor after a race that came down the wire. The finally tally's difference appeared to be a few hundred votes.

In Cambridge, well, it's complicated. According to City Clerk Donna Lopez, for the first time in 15 years data discs have crashed and hundreds of votes will need to be recounted. As of 1:30 a.m., there was no official word.

Salem voters not only reelected Mayor Kim Driscoll, they also approved a ballot question to reaffirm the city's status as a sanctuary city.

In Attleboro, longtime Republican Mayor Kevin Dumas was defeated by Democratic Rep. Paul Heroux — meaning the House may need to have a third special election this session.

In Lawrence, Mayor Dan Rivera withstood a return from former Mayor Willie Lantigua, whom Rivera defeated by just 81 votes a few years ago. At one point Lantigua was scrutinized as possibly being "the most corrupt mayor in America."

Somerville elected to give outspoken Mayor Joseph Curtatone another term in a runaway victory.
