No Surprises In Woburn Voting As Incumbents Roll To Reelection

With just three contested City Council races, voter turnout was under 4,000 across the city.

WOBURN, MA -- The incumbents in the three contested City Council races defeated their challengers in Tuesday's election, meaning the membership of Woburn City Council will remain unchanged for the next two years. With no state or federal elections and no major local races, as well as an uncontested reelection bid by Mayor Scott Galvin, turnout was as low as election officials had predicted, with under 4,00 registered voters heading to the polls Tuesday.

In the contested city council races:

  • In Ward 3, incumbent Mark Gaffney defeated Claire Malaguti, 513-163.
  • In Ward 6, incumbent Edward Tedesco defeated 348-294.
  • In Ward 7, Charles Viola lost his rematch against incumbent Lindsay Higgins, 572-354. Higgins defeated Viola two years ago to get elected to City Council for the first time.

Several City Council incumbents ran unopposed for reelection. Aldermen-at-Large Michael Concannon and Richard Haggerty, and City Council members Joanne Campbell (Ward 1), Richard Gately (Ward 2), Michael Anderson (Ward 4) and Darlene Mercer-Bruen(Ward 5) all ran unopposed as well.
