Tufts Medical School Evacuated Due To Haze From Fridge Fire

BOSTON, MA — Tufts University School of Medicine in Chinatown was evacuated Tuesday afternoon due to a haze caused by fire in a walk-in refrigerator, the Boston Fire Department reports.

Firefighters were called to 136 Harrison Street at 4 p.m. for a Level 2 Hazmat response, to investigate an unknown haze on the seventh floor. Crews evacuated the entire building as a precaution.

Firefighters determined the haze was caused by a fire in a sealed walk-in refrigerator, but there was no remaining hazard. Crews also checked the air quality of the building, and deemed it safe. No illnesses were reported.

Hazmat cruises remain on-scene as of 5 p.m. waiting for an environmental cleanup company to monitor the cleanup, according to the BFD.
