Braintree Naming Bridge After National Guard General, Radio Host

The bridge is down the street from his former home and crosses a river he used to swim in.

BRAINTREE, MA — On Saturday, the town will honor a man who served 43 years in the military.

He enlisted in the national guard and rose through the ranks, becoming a brigadier general, and after that was a radio announcer for high school football games and the New England Patriots. He even did play-by-play for the 1986 Superbowl. That man is Brig. Gen. John Carlson, who Braintree will rename the Quincy Avenue Bridge after.

Carlson died in 2016 at 82, but his legacy and importance to the Braintree community will live on, Mayor Joseph Sullivan said.

“It is a fitting tribute to John’s love of the military, his service to the country, as well as the East Braintree he loved,” he told the Patriot Ledger.
