Committee May Study Braintree Fire HQ

The five-person committee would determine if the town should renovate the current building or build new.

BRAINTREE, MA — The mayor's office is calling for a committee to study whether the town should renovate or build a new fire station.

Joseph Reynolds, Mayor Joseph Sullivan’s chief of staff, told the town council’s ways and means committee Wednesday that the five-member group would include someone from the mayor's office, the fire chief or his designee, a ways and means committee member, and someone from the town’s building and procurement departments, according to the Patriot Ledger.

Sullivan has backed renovation and is pushing for a $1 million renovation of the town's main fire station.

Some councilors say the former Noah Torrey School at 90 Pond St. is the best spot for a new home for the fire department, but Sullivan has targeted that site for veteran and senior housing. Councilor Shannon Hume said at a past meeting that studies have shown that a new fire department would cost $12 million, about $2 million more than a full renovation.

A vote on the committee is scheduled for Monday.
