With Hackett's Arrival, Kurzberg Returns to Retirement

The long-time Braintree superintendent's temporary return ended Monday.

As a new superintendent prepares to lead the Braintree Public Schools, a familiar face once again said farewell to the school district.

With Superintendent Frank Hackett taking the helm Monday, interim Superintendent Peter Kurzberg, who returned from retirement to lead the school system over the summer, will now return to retirement.

“I’ve enjoyed these past few months. They’ve gone by very quickly and the school year has really gotten off to a great start. There’s a lot of excitement in the schools, there’s a lot of excitement for a new superintendent and whole new central office team to lead the schools,” Kurzberg said during the school committee meeting.

Kurzberg spent 22 years as the Braintree superintendent before retiring in 2013.

“You have been a steady hand through the summer months and we appreciate the extra effort,” Mayor Joseph Sullivan said.

Monday’s school committee meeting was the first for Hackett, who was appointed to the position after an extensive search for the successor of Maureen Murray on July 21.

“A very warm welcome to Frank. We look forward to working with you and we’re excited about our new beginning,” committee member George Kokoros said.

Hackett spent eight years as the Pembroke superintendent before coming to Braintree. Prior, he was a superintendent and teacher in Maine.
