Over $12,000 Raised For Officers Involved In Motel 6 Shooting

Anyone who would like to contribute can do so by buying a "Braintree Strong" shirt though the treasurer's office.

BRAINTREE, MA — An event to support the officers involved in the recent shooting at Motel 6 was more than a success, according to town officials.

On May 13, the town held an event known as “Shine Braintree Blue” where residents could pick up a blue light bulb in support of police officers, buy "Braintree Strong" shirts, and contribute to a fund for the officers involved in the incident.

Town Council President Sean Powers called it a remarkable day, where even people from outside of Braintree attended.

According to Powers, over 400 blue lights were handed out and over $12,000 was raised for the officers.

At about 9:30 p.m. on May 5, five officers went to the motel to serve a restraining order. After the suspect, identified as Tizaya Jordan Robinson, refused to open the door to his room, officers used a key to enter and were greeted with gunfire from Robinson. Due to the gunshots, Officer Donald Delaney was struck in the head by shrapnel and was transported to Boston Medical Center. He was released two days later but faces future surgery.

“It doesn't matter how long anyone has been on the job, the amount of stress that comes with a near death situation is trying. Just seeing how they operate, it’s a 24-hour, 7-day a week job. At 3 a.m. in the morning, they are having meetings. I give them all the credit in the world to be able to do that job,” Councilor Charles Kokoros said.

Delaney and the other officers involved are on administrative leave, as is the protocol with officers involved in shootings. They are expected to return to work at the end of the department’s investigation into the matter.

Anyone who would like to purchase a Braintree Strong shirt for $20 can do so by contacting Jessica Margetis in the treasure’s office at 781-794-8138.
