Police Chief Jenkins Announces Retirement Amidst Evidence Scandal
After audit found thousands of pieces of Braintree Police Department evidence missing, the chief will step down from his position.

BRAINTREE, MA — In the wake of a scandal that shows an evidence room in disarray, Braintree Police Chief Russell Jenkins has announced his retirement.
In a letter dated Sept. 21, the chief said his last day will be Oct. 7.
"It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the chief of the Braintree Police Department these past four years," Jenkins said.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan has accepted the resignation.
These past few weeks have not been the best for the police department. Earlier this month, an audit of the evidence room revealed the complete mishandling of evidences, with thousands of pieces of narcotics and property evidence, dozens of firearms, and over $407,000 in cash missing.

Jenkins became Braintree's top cop in 2012, previously serving as the deputy chief starting in 2004. He has been with the department since 1983.
