Town Council to Consider Interim Chief Shastany for Permanent Role

Braintree's top cop could lose the interim part of his title Tuesday night.

BRAINTREE, MA — Braintree's interim police chief could become the town's permanent police chief after Tuesday night.

The town council's committee on ways and means is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. to consider the appointment of Paul Shastany to the post. The full council is scheduled to vote during their meeting later that night.

Shastany has led the Braintree Police Department since Oct. 7, taking the job following the department's well-documented evidence locker scandal. Mayor Joseph Sullivan has named Shastany his pick for the permanent role, pending town council approval.

"Chief Shastany has developed new policies and procedures and has provided department-wide training in the use of force, internal affairs, reporting, vehicular pursuits, holding facilities, and communications. Chief Shastany has also instituted important changes in the police department's handling of property and evidence and will continue the department's efforts in becoming a national leader in evidence management," Sullivan said in a letter to the council.

Prior to Braintree, Shastany served as the police chief of the Stoughton Police Department. He retired from the post in April 2016.
